Battle the Invisible with UV Lights

Battle the Invisible with UV Lights

Just because CoVid-19 has traumatized our whole existence, new innovations have been flooding the market to aid in the combat. Though the panic has been considerably decreased, the terrors of imminent dangers inflicted by the viral spread have been haunting the human mind ever since its invasion. The tech giants, though appalled for a while, have woken up to the clarion call that is made. The world is aware of the persistent research the Doctors worldwide do to find the vaccine for the same. Meanwhile, Scientists have been constantly on research to find the possibilities of creating a protective environment to fight against the invisible enemy.

As we surfed the recent advancements in electronics, the disinfectant UVC lights intrigued us. You heard it right! The Ultraviolet rays, the rays which are noted for their harmful effects on skin and eyes, are used here to battle with microorganisms.

We are familiar with UVA and UVB rays, then what might possibly be UVC rays?

As the protective Ozone defends the earth by shielding it from the harmful rays, skin specialists advise lathering our skin with sunscreens to safeguard us from the harmful UVA and UVB rays from the sun. Unlike the UVA and UVB rays that have longer wavelengths, the UVC rays have shorter wavelengths to cut through the atmospheric layers. So it is discovered that UVC rays are harmless to humans but not to microbes.

How does it work?

Another interesting fact is that the UV light is invisible to the human eye, and exists on an electromagnetic spectrum between normal light and X-ray. This UVC is re-created into a lightbulb. When the light is switched on, it emits a proper dose of UVC rays that would cease the growth and spread of the virus and so these bulbs are in high demand in the hospitals recently. No wonder the New York City subways are armed ready with the UVC emitting light bulbs to control the massive spread! (Source: The Verge)

As Plato puts it, ‘Necessity is the mother of invention’ This has always proven to be true! Electronic world trendsetters like Philips have already begun the radiation experiments in their electronic goodies. But its reliability which depends on the duration of radiation exposure and its aftereffects are still a mystery!
